From grain to bottle
150 years of "Balegemse dreupel"
Distillery Van Damme is well known in East-Flanders. The jenever is still distilled in the traditional way, the way it was done back in the 19th century.
The Balegem distillery is the last authentic farm distillery in the Benelux. This means that the farm grows its own rye, the alcohol is distilled in-house and the cattle provide manure for the land. The slogan “From grain to bottle” or “From soil to spoil” certainly applies to the Distillery!
On 8 February, 2010, minister Bourgeois signed the decision to protect the Distillery Van Damme. As a result, the farm and the original distilling facility from 1862 are now classified as heritage. The steam engine still operates at full capacity, as in its early years. Coal-powered!
The 26th of December, 2012, the Distillery Van Damme celebrated its 150 anniversary! Imagine: one and a half century of delightful spirits!
